Downloading Northstar

  1. Open this link: https://www.northstarmis.org .
  2. Select the “download” button on the first download section.
  3. Depending on your browser, you may have to select the set-up file that just downloaded - in the bottom left corner of your screen. If not, a box should appear asking if you want to “run” the file. Verify that the publisher says "University of Utah" and then proceed by selecting “Run”.
  4. A shortcut will be added to your desktop and the application will open automatically when it's installation is finished.
  5. Future updates will happen automatically as needed.

Logging into Northstar/Selecting Server/Locked Out

  1. Enter your username and password you received.
  2. In the server field, select your school name followed by "production".
  3. If you type in the wrong username and/or password, you will be locked out after the third try. You will see an error that says “Invalid Username or Password”. Please contact the SIS specialist or your program director to unlock this for you.

Preferences/Changing Password

  1. Once you are logged in, you will see your username located in the upper right corner. If your name was Test Person, it would look similar to this: persontest@oooproduction. Click on this to open your user menu.
  2. Click on “Change Password” to change your password. It will prompt you to enter your old password, new password, then click on change. Your new password must meet a minimum security measure of at least 8 digits and include at least one character or symbol (a number doesn’t count as a character or symbol).
  3. Click on “Preferences” to make changes to your User Interface.

Uninstallation Instructions

  1. Open the Start Menu on your desktop.
  2. Search "Add or remove programs" and open the suggested link.
  3. Scroll through the apps list and find "Northstar" or the "Clocking Station".
  4. Select the desired app, click "Uninstall" and follow the prompts.

Advanced Uninstall

  1. Uninstall Northstar as described above.
  2. Restart the computer.
  3. Run rundll32 %SystemRoot%\\system32\\dfshim.dll CleanOnlineAppCache from an elevated command prompt.
  4. You might have to manually delete the ClickOnce deployment folders.
    • On Windows Vista or higher, this will be the %LocalAppData%\\Apps\\2.0 directory.
    • On Windows XP this will be the %USERPROFILE%\\Local Settings\\Apps\\2.0 directory.
  5. Restart the computer again.
  6. Re-install Northstar from https://northstarmis.org/.
